Crusted Walls: A Fairytale
Crusted walls hide her
behind the frailty
Of generations and tradition
an unspoken destiny
She lives behind the ruins
of words unspoken
Walks on a carpet of shards
of hearts broken
She’s surrounded by walls painted
landscaped and clean
But she’s never touched a wildflower
or tasted wine unseen
Her tears slide down the stone
into a sea of green
Her heart bequeathed to one with whom
she cannot speak or see
Nightly she sings from the window
a sweet melody
“If I could scale the walls of ruins
“I would go with you and be your love”
And love breaks the curse—
walls crumble, rocks split
And pin-pricked drops
of red flame into rosebuds of hope
And she plans her escape
to pluck the rose
in meadow beyond
